In the News

“I appreciate the recent petrol price increases are causing pain for motorists at the pump, particularly for those already struggling to make ends meet.”
Energy Minister Megan Woods.

“Given NZ’s fuel supply has become more and more efficient over the last 30 years, any changes would need to be very carefully considered in order to avoid unintended negative consequences.”
Z Energy CEO Mike Bennetts.

“We are sitting at cart in at over 12,000t per working day, but our predictions show we’ll be shifting 13,000t of wood per working day before very long. That will lead to record-breaking tonnage figures into the future for Eastland Port.”
Eastland Port general manager Andrew Gaddum.

IN THIS WEEK'S ISSUE

16 November 2017

  • This Week... The trucking industry is bracing itself for further increases in fuel prices, with petrol prices at their highest since November 2014. A weaker NZ dollar and rising oil prices are partly to blame.
  • Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods has expressed concern about the recent rise in the price of petrol but has yet to decide whether to follow up the earlier probe undertaken by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The earlier inquiry questioned whether the market was competitive, and said rises in retailers’ margins in recent years were not justified by increased investment.
  • An independent Board of Inquiry has given approval to the $1.8bn East West Link in Auckland in a draft decision. However, under Labour’s confidence and supply agreement with the Green Party, the new Govt says the link will not proceed “as currently proposed.”
  • And Wellington Airport has signed an agreement with the world’s largest construction firm China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) and airline China Express to help build its $300m runway extension. A Memorandum of Understanding sets out an agreement for the parties to work together on the airport runway extension and develop the area, such as building hotels.
